Title: "A Second Look" Artist: Doug Rundle
Where: Japanese Garden is located at 611 SW Kingston Ave, Portland, OR 97205. Meet at the entrance to the garden.
When: Thursday, August 27at 10:00 am
Event Information:
The theme of this outing to the Garden is "A Second Look". Everyone is encouraged to look beyond the obvious and to seek the unique subjects, light, and compositions that the Garden has to offer. August is a great time of year for this exercise because the blooms of spring and early summer are largely gone, and the rush of Fall color has yet to begin. It is a contemplative time of year, but there are compelling photographs to be made. This might mean photographing a familiar subject from an unusual angle or vantage point, or creating an abstraction using ICM or other technique. Of course, following this theme is optional, and you are welcome to come photograph however you wish. After the outing I would love to put together a slide show with a contribution from each participant, and then show it at an upcoming meeting. Admission to the Garden is $22.50, and $19.50 over 65. Hope to see you there!
Artist Statement: by Doug Rundle
“I call this series of images “A Second Look”. Portland Japanese Garden is a visual feast for visitors, and perhaps especially for photographers. I have been photographing the Garden for 9 years and have enjoyed making images of the iconic scenes like the “famous maple” or Heavenly Falls. But the more time I spend, the more I notice and appreciate the exquisite detail in all aspects of the Garden. And that is what these photographs are about: little things that you may not see on your initial visits but then begin to appreciate as time goes by. Maybe it’s something you must crouch down to see, or a tree seen anew in a different season. Or it might be something viewed from a new angle or in a different light – a second look.”- Doug Rundle
