Timed-Entry Permits For Columbia Will Impact Photographers

Planning to photograph waterfalls in the Columbia Gorge? You may need a permit, which went on sale today (5/10/2022). The timed-entry permits will be required between 9 am and 6pm, 5/24/2022~9/5/22.

Even if you are not planning to park and scout images, permits will be required for all vehicles on the scenic highway for Multnomah falls (exit 31) and also between Bridal Veil (exit 28) and Ainsworth State Park (exit 31). The Vista House, Angels Rest trailhead, Latourell Falls and Bridal Veil Falls may be visited without permits. You can buy the $2 permit online up to two weeks in advance. There will also be a limited number of free, same-day permits at the Gorge Visitor Center (Troutdale) or the Cascade Locks Historical Museum.

There will be booths at each end of the permitted area to check for physical or digital permits. A permit does not guarantee a parking spot, although you may stay within the area for as long as you like once inside. In addition, the usual parking permits will also be in effect.

Drivers will be required to show physical or digital proof of their permits at check-in booths situated at either side of that stretch of the highway. Once through, visitors can stay in the area as long as they like. Parking at trailheads and viewpoints is not guaranteed, however, and existing parking permits will still be required.

If you bicycle in, or book a seat on a tour, a shuttle, or a trolley, you will not need a permit; only drivers of personally-owned vehicles do.
