Dan Milnor on Promoting and Marketing

About five years ago, Dan Milnor spoke to the Portland Photographers Forum and conducted a follow-up workshop. One of his blog posts may be of interested to those struggling with promoting and marketing images. Here are a few points from a longer piece at https://www.blurb.com/blog/hit-the-books-dan-milnor-recognition/ .

  1. earn to make original work that is immediately identifiable as yours.

  2. This can take a very long time, keep at it.

  3. If your work looks like what somebody else is doing, the kind of clients you want will notice immediately who did that first.

  4. Go slow with social media. Only post when you have something significant to say and show only your best work when it becomes available.

  5. Websites are still relevant because there is no marketing, advertising, or hidden algorithms driving the content. It’s just what you want it to be.

  6. Email newsletters are still good for the same reasons.

  7. Print is still highly respected, especially to collectors, curators, and institutions.
