Outing: Portland Transmission Spring Classic

  • Portland Transmission Warehouse 1016 Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard Portland, OR, 97214 United States (map)

If you enjoy photographing classic cars and hot rods, you’ll want to join us for this year’s Portland Transmission Spring Classic. It is a free event, always held the Saturday before Mother’s Day. This year its on Saturday, May 9th. The first Spring Classic was in 1983 with only 28 cars. By 2010 the number of cars had grown to 550+. The event is hosted by Portland Transmission Warehouse, located on SE Hawthorne. Street parking is wherever you can find it!

Location & Start Time: The Spring Classic begins at 7am and ends at 11am, so it’s a short event. The light is usually best earlier in the day so we will be meeting at 7:15 at the northwest corner of SE 11th Ave. and SE Mill St. The event spans several blocks. Attendees need to be on time because we will be leaving the meeting spot shortly at 7:30. We tend to scatter like quail after leaving the meeting site so if you miss us just follow your nose from one cool car to the next and you will bump into most of the rest of us one at a time.

Emphasis on Skills:

  • There will be plenty of opportunity to photograph all sorts of interesting vehicles, from hot rods to restored military vehicles. One of the challenges is to sort through the milieu of vehicles and people to find interesting photos. In some cases, you may want to shoot an entire vehicle, in others you may want to focus on interesting details.

  • There will also be great opportunities for photographing interesting people who are part of the car-culture.

  • If it rains, it will offer a unique opportunity to photograph custom cars in the rain. Considerbringing a macro lens to experiment with reflections in rain drops that collect on the cars.

  • Try to get a variety of photos that tell the story of this cool, Portland car event.

  • Considerations:

  • The better the weather, the more cars and hot rods will be there. However, this is a rain-or-shine event so dress for the weather.

  • Be prepared to do some walking as vehicles will be spread throughout the streets south of Hawthorne and west of SE 11th Ave.

  • PPF Photo Outings are open to members only. However, if you are eager to recruit a new member you may bring them to one session as a guest.

  • All attendees will be required to sign a liability release upon arrival at the meeting spot.

Coordinator and Contact Information:

For more information about the event look up the Portland Transmission Warehouse Classic Car Show online or contact Mike Osborne at troglodytes1@att.net. If you don’t arrive at the meet site by 7:30 am you will not be considered a PPF attendee for legal purposes but may have a good time anyway!.
