Alpenrose Bicycle Racing
When I first moved to Southwest Portland in the mid 90s, I was surprised to learn that Oregon’s only velodrome was located at Alpenrose Dairy – just a mile from where I live. I have had a long interest in bicycle racing and have seen and participated in many races but had never seen an official bicycle track race at a velodrome. Over the years I visited Alpenrose Velodrome many times with my camera to photograph races and racers. Sadley, the Alpenrose Dairy site including the velodrome has been completely demolished to make room for a massive housing development. In my presentation I’ll share a selection of photos from the glory days of bicycle track racing in Oregon as well as other types of racing that took place on the Alpenrose Dairy property.
Loren Nelson
Long-time PPF member Loren Nelson started photographing in 1972, using a Deardorff 4X5 camera, and printing his negatives in a traditional darkroom. His subject matter included landscapes, seascapes, botanicals, and Under Wraps, a series on plastic-wrapped buildings. In 2016, several life changes opened up new possibilities in his photography, including the use of digital cameras and an iPhone, as well as creating pigment prints in the light. Loren will share a little about his early work, but will concentrate mostly on recent portfolios of both black and white and color images.
Virtual Monthly Presenter’s Meeting
Our featured speakers are typically accomplished photographers from throughout the US and beyond. The monthly meetings also include a “photo challenge” segment, in which all current PPF members are invited to submit photos that reflect a specific theme. These meetings are the Third Monday of the month and open to the public.
