Hugh Sakols
I first went SCUBA diving when I was 14 years old. By the time I was 16, I had acquired a Nikonos II underwater camera. This camera led to my first foray into documenting the natural world and an interest in biology. At the time, I did most of my SCUBA diving in Monterey / Carmel, California. While in college, I started working summers just outside Yosemite National Park, lured by the granite walls, mountains, and wilderness adventures. I eventually moved to El Portal, a gateway to Yosemite, and lived there for 25 years. However, my interest in diving and underwater photography never left me. Over the last year, I have started to dive in the Pacific Northwest, made two trips to Indonesia, and participated in the Backscatter Digital Shootout in Bonaire.
In this presentation, I will share my underwater photography journey first using Kodachrome and then transitioning to digital. I’ll discuss the fundamentals and challenges of underwater photography and how it differs from land-based photography. I’ll also address safety concerns while diving with a camera.
