Visiting Oregon’s Uncut Gem
You’ll arrive at the Opal Creek trailhead parking area no later than 4:30 PM Friday afternoon, in order to load gear on the 5:00 PM shuttle and have time for the 3-mile walk on the road along the Little North Fork of the Santiam River through beautiful old growth forest. At Jawbone Flats (www.opalcreek.org/about/jawbone-flats) you will find a bed in Cabin 5, which has comfortable living room, showers, and a small kitchen. Dinner will be at 6:00 PM in the Commons, and any dietary restrictions you may have can be accommodated, with advance notice. (There is also a noon shuttle on Friday, if you want to come earlier.)
Saturday morning, full breakfast is served at 8:00 AM. You’ll have the day to hike and explore along Opal Creek, which is accessible at the bridge above Opal Pool and can be viewed from the trail. At this season the water will be low, so it’s possible to walk in the stream itself. You’ll have experienced PPF members to consult about photographic locations and possibilities. In addition to the streams and forest, you’ll see a lot of mining equipment along the road and at Jawbone Flats.
Saturday night dinner and Sunday breakfast are included. On Sunday, you can leave your bags and gear to be taken out on the shuttle (11:30 AM or 4:30 PM) and have a leisurely walk out along the Santiam. Your bags will be waiting when you reach the trailhead.
If you like to plan in more detail, please contact PPF member Mike O’Brien, email@example.com or 503-819-8991. He’s been visiting Opal Creek for many years and is happy to answer your questions.
